Blogging might seem like just another responsibility to jam into your schedule. And yet, it doesn't have to be like that. You could always devote a little bit of time once a week to the blog. And despite your trouble, you would actually be creating a very useful tool, both for yourself and for others. Here are a few reasons why you should consider blogging about your experiences in medical school.

To Build Community

Blogging about your education is a great way to extend your learning community beyond the physical boundaries of your particular medical school. As you write about your medical-related interests, new things you have learned, and your troubles, other students can read and react to your thoughts. Then you can react in turn, thus continuing the conversation. You essentially expand your community to include not only the students with whom you study, but also students in other programs around the world. By joining this community, ideally you can strengthen it with your own ideas and interactions with others. Through the transfer of knowledge and experiences, the community can improve as a whole.

To Reflect on Your Experiences

Another important aspect of learning is the act of self-reflection. Through self-reflection, students evaluate their learning process, their successes and failures, and their plans to move forward. Self-reflection is a professional tool as well, and many highly successful organizations use it to figure out how they could do a better job next time: aviation crews, athletic teams, and military units often debrief after they experience significant events. So reflecting upon your day's work and education will help you tackle the next challenge.

To Create a Guidebook

To a certain set of readers, your blog could work as a guidebook to medical school. Prospective students, new students, and those who have just begun considering a career in medicine all could benefit from reading the thoughts, opinions, and worries of a current medical student working through the program. Such a blog might implicitly help prospective students prepare for the rigorous work of medical school. Through your experiences, others can learn what to expect.

Of course, you can adjust the focus of your blog however you like. You can mix and match these purposes, or you can limit your writing to just one. The goal is that the blog be useful in some way, and not become busywork, something you feel like you have to do. If that happens, eventually you'll neglect the blog, and it will no longer be worthwhile to yourself and to other readers. So think carefully about whether or not blogging while you're in school is right for you. If you think you can somehow balance your own education with writing a blog that benefits you and your readers, then maybe blogging will be perfect for you.

By-line:

This guest post is contributed by Tim Handorf, who writes on the topics of online colleges and universities. Or maybe not so much failure itself as admitting to it. This situation results in two odd treatments (at least in my [personal] experience).

Said medical professional realizes he/she hasn't succeeded in something* and then fabricates excuses and attempts to reinforce them in order to show nothing ever happened.

Said medical professional simply ignores the something* falsely hoping it will somehow solve itself.

Both methods are far from ideal and even farther from being palliative and no where near curative. After reading a bit of psychology not too long ago I realized that maybe a possible reason for these futile rescue attempts is fear. So in order to make any progress this fear must be revealed what ever it may be.

So I began asking myself specific questions about why I stopped doing something that once ago I thought would have been a great idea. I came up with nothing, essentially unraveling a tangled web of misconceptions and false trepidations (awesome word, no?).

So without further ado, I sincerely apologize for neglecting this resource and all the people who have commented on my old posts. I will try to build up the fire that once helped start this blog and would like to thank all the people who have left comments. Those comments helped prevent all this from completely being extinguished.

Stay tuned for a possible blogging competition from Thailand in the next post.

*Cholecystectomies, Arthral aspirations, Blogging, Hip Abductor Replacements, etc, etc

Soon...

I promise a blog entry by the end of this week. LoverockMD just started up his English blog but went straight for the throat and put in some medical posts describing Fibrous Dysplasia and a Hangman's Fracture among others. LoverockMD writes about medical conditions in a way that skims enough of the top to get the reader interested and doesn't dive too far deep so that the reader drowns. It's a nice mix of interesting and informative without overkill. In certain posts LoverockMD also puts in his one view or thoughts which give the posts a more personal feel to them.

Hopefully by including the blog 'My Medical Journey,' LoverockMD will feel inspired to continue putting out fine posts!

And remember: Be healthy and get rich!

A(n)nals of an Idle Mind

Never make promises because if you fail to keep them, they'll haunt the back of your mind until you fulfill them! lol

A(n)nals of an Idle Mind is a blog by Arps who lives in Jodhpur, India (Yes, I linked that to Google Maps. I have to apologize for that. Lots of physiology and biochemistry and blah blah blah. Okay, enough with the excuses. Here's a blog!

The Fantastic Letters of Professor Scrub are just that, letters. Letters that deal with day to day issues in a funny way. They poke in all the right spots, from sarcastic and dumb to funny and just plain evil.

Although there isn't a lot of medical explaining, most letters have have something to do with medicine, so it gets you thinking. Vouchers for druggies and bubble gum for the fat people are examples of the style of writing that although may seem wierd has profound underlying connotations.

There are also a few interesting posts that make you go, "huh?" Such as Koro - An Important Affliction.

Mind games for the masses of medically orientated (and not) :)

ScienceRoll

I was going to go to sleep but by a freak chance of fate I thought I'd check out a blog and the next one on the list was ScienceRoll.

Bertalan Meskó is the founder of this very cool blog. Currently Bertalan is at the University of Debrecen, Hungary in 4th year with aspirations of becoming a clinical geneticist.

Bertalan's blog simplifies medicine and genetics and makes it easier to understand for the non-medical community and gives ideas for other doctors and students of how something can be explained and/or made very interesting.

ScienceRoll is not only easy to read but also shine's of professional quality posting which touches upon subjects such as Modification of Genes by Diets and gives honorary mentions of Doctors who have contributed so much to medicine. It is an interesting read for those who like simple, black and white blogs which describe in detail the ins and outs of medical school, such as PBL (Problem Based Learning) and Med School Interview Tips.

Take notice of the sidebar at CCLCM Student, as it contains links to very informative FAQ's that may come in handy. Regular posts also describe in very good detail how classes look like and the little things that the writer pays attention to.

I don't really know how to describe this blog but it is very appealing. I like stories and especially ones that are like the grandfather kind, not boring or anything of the likes. The ones that are calm yet you can see the humour or irony in them. The kind that makes you feel as if you are reliving that moment. Stories that give just the right amount of detail in just the right moment. You can truly feel the sincerity, intelligence, and when you finished reading, you smile and say to yourself, "Yeah, that was good."

All Scrubbed Up

I must admit this blog is cool. And posting links to it all would take me forever, so check it out!

But it's not all fun and games here, serious posts are also written, such as Misunderstanding around HIV testing in SA, and the concerns of patients googling their symptoms (oh, haven't we all done that?).

But don't take my review for it, check out Domkop's one too.

DiBasic

I thought I should celebrate my upcoming histology exam with an update to this collection of blogs that I've been neglecting a little. I have a plethora, and I mean a plethora, of blogs to add.

Dibasic is a blog by a Med Student in Grenada who writes off campus restuarant reviews on the side. The blog is mostly a collection of personal thoughts and day to day things, but the details are what makes this wonderful time in each student's life so fun.

One of the interesting things that DiBasic explains is the wierd term division that the Med School over there has implemented in it's curriculum, but I'll let you find the other posts that explain it ;) Also is provided a quick review of what a first year looks like at the university for those people too lazy to search up an official curriculum from a website (or who just want to have the pleasure of reading a Med Student's blog). Going back a few months we find other posts that are of interest also, such A Question From a Prospective Student.

Lastly I would just like to congratulate on the move to Wordpress that happened not too long ago. It's worth checking out even if you're only into looking at pictures, the header is pretty cool. Angry Medic has a variety of posts, most of which are funny and poke medicine in that special way (that makes you giggle :) ). Angry Medic displays his dismay for lack of theme music when one enters a ward in their white coat among many other interesting posts.

I keep trying to convince others that we Med Skule students do indeed have lives. I link to posts full of supposedly real facts of people doing things, but we finally have (or had some) hard proof of this theory. Angry Medic reveals and provide(d)s tangible evidence of this. Kudos to him!

And of course there are the classical posts about a med student's journey through med school. I have to put down the whole title because I like it so much. Good Nursie! But that's another blog.

Of Short White Coats and Stethoscopes is written by Calavera in London, UK. Calavera writes about her adventures in med school, such as when she Chinwagged with the Hotshots of the Emergency Medicine world at the CEM or the Dumb Things She's Done Today. The underground in London also has it's spotlight on Of Short White Coats and Stethoscopes.

Anatomy Notes

Anatomy Notes is by Brad Wright from Salt Lake City, Utah in the United States. Before Brad converted to a Medical Student he lectures at the University of Utah School of Medicine. More specifically he taught anatomy to med students. (now here's a lesson to be learned, you stick around long enough with someone and you're bound to turn into them. This goes for all you future psychiatrists... ;) ).

Brad makes it fun and interesting to read about a first year student in medicine. His posts are simple and to the point, yet are written in such a way that they truly get your attention span. If you're not in med school (or if you are and would like to be reminded of those fun first-year times) than Anatomy Notes is a wonderful read. Rob tells us of is first days in Capetown and the journey there. It's clear, concise, and a relaxing read from hard core Med books.

Nurse to Doctor

I love Gray's Anatomy, especially the episode when the Doctors think they're better than the Nurses but then the Nurses go on strike and then the s**t hits the fan for the Doctors and they realized they're not so big after all...anyway, I'm rambling.

I think Nurse to Doctor is a pretty cool addition in my 2 - 0 streak of "changing profession blogs." Patrick is really liking his experience so far, especially learning about facial nerves and the such (I don't remember my facial nerve diagrams being so...complicated). Not in the children's one. She explained that since I will be a "newbie" at everything I will do and most things will probably cause discomfort for the patient while I learn to do them, I should practice on adults as it will be easier for me. She said I wouldn't have to watch as how children cry and squirm in pain as I insert an IV drip, such as Garbage had to do. What happens after med school? Is it all porsche cars, fine cigars, and women (not necessarily in that order)?

Check it out, especially the malpractice insurance post.

That Med School Guy

Jason is That Medical School Guy. The Examining Room tries to capture a bit of the intersection between medicine and the human condition. It is the combination of a family doctor who likes to write.

Just like our previous blog entry, Dr. Charles has also published a book, Legends of the Examining Room. I like the style of this author. The Mark of Cain is a post that really stands out and is something I bookmarked and sent out to a few friends. Maybe I should mine to something like "The Tuberosity of So and So"). This is KK's first ever blog and it got off to a very nice start, meaning it has good quality posting and writing from the very beginning.

I'd love to make a nice summary of the page but I think that the little description on the right side on KK's blog speaks for itself. If it's not enough to get you interested...I don't know what is.

No real patients were harmed in the making of this blog. As laughter is the best medicine, the witty anecdotes contained herein may even help you avoid that 3rd heart attack. If, however, you feel that my (lack of) humour is in poor taste and is infact likely to induce that heart attack rather than prevent it, then you should accept my deepest and heartfelt apologies for causing offense. Then insert your head deep into your highly-strung, over-opinionated and worryingly distended rectum & go read the Disney website or something more suitable. Oh...and kids probably shouldn't read this. Just incase. Someone - please think of the children.

Man, that brightened up my day, had to wake up at 5 for hospital duty. Wants to see how he was before he became a physician once he becomes a physician by checking back to his blog. An interesting idea, something that never occured to me to do. There's lots of other stuff in here, not just first year medical mumbo-jumbo. Just recently met that someone special.

Two (presidential) Terms Later is a blogger in Columbus, Ohio (States) who has a neat description. "I am blogging an amateur sport." That so fits cut-throat medical student. Lots of commentary on ethics, medicine, politics, and sports - plus assorted ramblings - from Aaron Kithcart, a third-year MD/PhD student at The Ohio State University. It's in the "Green Lungs of Poland." Very nice surroundings and the climate isn't so close to the Baltic. Nicer.
2. We have newly renovated anatomy, chemistry, and pathology department. (Pathology is like walking into Narnia. Everything is brand-spanking new. There are costant revovations being done.
3. Our level of education is high. The English curriculum is based exactly on the Polish one. 97.3% of our Polish graduates passed the National Polish Medical Exam (LEP).
4. Last year three of our English students achieved high awards in the Golden Scapula Anatomical contest in Warsaw. Link Here.
5. We have an active student body. We're currently organizing a soccer tournament with other Medical Universities in Poland (English divisions)
6. Bialystok Medical University also gets a lot of EU funding due to our location and medical activity in the professional world.
7. We have our own hospital.
8. Our tuition is 9,500 Euro for first year and 8,500 Euro for succeeding years. Cheaper than Szczecin.
9. I'm here, who wouldn't want to study with me? :)

But essentially it falls down to your choice. There is no doubt that Szczecin is also probably a very good medical university and that their education is adequate. You'll become a doctor here and there and you'll be treating patients (hopefully) with the same amount of respect, dignity, and professionalism no matter where you graduate from.

But I for one would not transfer for any reason. I love it here.
Our Student's site (which I made :) ) www.ambenglish.com

An NHS Blog

Although not a "Doctor Blog" nor a Medical Student, I still felt it necessary to include Tom Reynold's (a pseudonym obviously) Blog to our list.

His blog tells the tale of an EMS worker (paramedic) and the day to day struggle with good, bad, and the just plain wierd. links ain't that bad for starters :)
And again, if you've got a Medical Student Blog or even a Medical Profession(al) Blog please submit a link via comment or email.
The First of Many

I started a blog not too long ago and wanted it to be something about my life that the world could see. No particular audience. A few months later I ended up in Poland studying medicine and my blog's been changed to a "Medical Blog". More specifically, an account of my experiences as a medical student. The interesting things that happen, the material that strikes the heart, topics that may compell people to wonder, and just plain stupid old me.

Because of this, I searched a few days ago for other Medical Student Blogs and found some. I was a little surprised that there are such blogs, but also kind of expected it. It was kind of hard finding some, or atleast I though so. I read some blogs from all around the world. Ranging from the States and Australia to India and Ukraine (and of course mine in Poland).

I thought it would be interesting to see if a Medical Student Blog Webring could be formed as I couldn't really find one (or maybe just didn't look hard enough :) ). I have no high hopes for this project and I wouldn't be dissappointed if it didn't work out...but if it did, that would be pretty cool. Not to mention helpful for others.

If you have a link to a blog that you'd like on this place, please email me through the Profiles section or through my blog or coment somewhere. I'd also like to get your location to put on the link. I ask that you take the icon that's on the right side at the bottom (and now at the top), the Medical Student Blogs (Med Student) picture thing, similar to the "I power Blogspot" one, and place it on your site somewhere with a link to this one, but that's not necessary. I know not everyone is a "Med Student" (because there are people who have graduated from med school :) ) but medicine is constantly changing and I guess you can consider yourself a student of medicine for life. Hopefully something will come of this :)
